Restaurant prepares free food for stray dogs
One day an unexpected customer walks into Gerardo Ortiz’s restaurant, Ajilalo, in Peru. It was a stray dog whose eyes read hunger. Ortiz could have chased him away, but he didn’t. Instead, he prepared him a free meal.
Ortiz prepared food especially for the dog. Thus began a wonderful tradition that continues to this day.
Every night the hungry and stray dog went to get a free meal from Ortiz’s restaurant. But it wasn’t long before word of Ortiz’s kindness and generosity spread among the local stray dog community. With the first visitor, more dogs began arriving – and Ortiz welcomed them with free food.
To this day, many stray dogs arrive outside Ortiz’s restaurant every night. Many of them are regular “customers” and others come for the first time – all hoping to get a meal thanks to Ortiz’s kindness.
As Ortiz prepares food he looks over and sees the face of a new dog up ahead. It politely waits to see if the rumor that free food is being offered is true. It always is.
“To me, they’re the best customers,” Ortiz says.
Ortiz’s human clients accept this gesture with open hearts. Inspired by Ortiz, they also bring food for their visiting dogs.
“Fortunately, our customers responded well to the dogs,” Ortiz said. “They’re attached to them.”
Ortiz’s wonderful gesture of feeding all the stray dogs that come in not only keeps them from starving. It allows them to understand that their lives matter – a truth Ortiz is happy to prove to them every day.
“They pay us with their happiness and wagging tails,” Ortiz says. “They’re very appreciative and we enjoy giving more than receiving. I’ve loved animals since I was a kid. My mother always taught us to help others, both people and animals. She is my inspiration.”
